The first eight digits of every IMEI are a Type Allocation Code that the GSMA assigns to one model from one maker. We keep the registry of those codes — about 255,000 of them — and look yours up in it.
The 15th digit is a checksum over the first fourteen. If it does not match, a digit was mistyped, the number was made up, or the phone's IMEI has been altered. The result shows the digit that would make it valid, so a typo is easy to spot.
